DESCRIPTION:The Garage Jam is an open\, friendly bluegrass circle that meets the first and third Monday of every month\, from 6 to 8 pm. All kinds of pickers show up\, from rank beginners to grizzled veterans\, plus folks who just come to listen and socialize. The repertoire is straight-up traditional bluegrass\, although the occasional old-time or folk-inflected choice will pop up. The format is the old-fashioned song circle\, with each participant getting a turn to call a song and set its key\, pace\, and feel. An experienced jam leader and bass player are always present to help keep things on track. Everyone is welcome — come on down!

DESCRIPTION:Located near the Joslyn Adult Center\, this friendly\, outdoor bluegrass jam occurs nearly every Sunday at 12 noon and typically goes until at least 2pm but may go as late as 4pm on occasion. All ages\, skill levels and bluegrass instruments are welcome to come on down and play! Ample parking is available on both Griffith Park Drive and the main lot seen in the above image. SUMMARY:Cantara Loop at the Side Door
DESCRIPTION:Cantara Loop is a Gold Country bluegrass band bringing hard-driving picking\, rich three-part harmonies\, and deep musical chemistry to the stage. Featuring Brian Burke (guitar\, One Button Suit)\, Tom Shewmake (mandolin\, One Button Suit)\, Finn Tobias (banjo)\, Andy Lentz (fiddle\, Rita Hosking\, The Town Howlers)\, and Emily Triplett Lentz (bass)\, the group honors traditional bluegrass while making room for modern influences. \nThe band was brought together by the late Kathy Barwick\, a beloved multi-instrumentalist\, teacher\, and pillar of the California bluegrass scene. A Sacramento native who later made her home in Grass Valley\, Kathy introduced the five musicians at a jam at her house\, hinting that she had a knack for bringing people together who wound up forming bands. She was right again. After her passing in 2025\, the group gathered to play in her honor\, and were so energized by the sound that they decided to keep the music going. \nCantara Loop takes its name from one of Kathy’s original tunes\, a favorite among her friends and students. Some of the band’s members were lucky to study with her and see her as a mentor; all of them counted her as a friend and inspiration. \nWith a repertoire that balances barn-burning instrumentals with lonesome waltzes\, Cantara Loop celebrates both the roots and the living\, breathing present of California bluegrass.

With concerts co-curated by Grammy-award winner Laurie Lewis and Leah Wollenberg\, plus curated instructional workshops\, Berkeley Bluegrass Festival brings together leaders of the genre\, up-and-coming artists\, and music fans for two days of concerts\, jams\, workshops \, and good old-fashioned merriment to kick off the summer music festival season. \nBerkeley Bluegrass Festival Emcee: Allegra Thompson \nWhat is Bluegrass? \nThe question\, “What is Bluegrass anyway?” or WIBA\, has been argued over by “experts” for the last 80 years at least. Bluegrass music\, so named after Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys band\, began life as a distinct melding of musical styles that Monroe was inspired by and grew up with in rural Kentucky in the first half of the 20th century: old-time stringbands\, both Black and white; early Western Swing; mostly-Baptist church singing; and other early rural music styles. Since then\, every new generation of musicians drawn to the genre have added their own diverse influences and instruments into the mix. Now\, it is an ever-evolving stew built on a roux of (mostly) acoustic three-finger-style banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin with whatever else individuals want to add. It’s music we love.
