Spring Campout 2024

Hello Bluegrassers and Everyone else…..

I’m hoping your New Year is living up to your expectations and that you are looking forward to playing or enjoying some music in 2024!!!

Spring Campout 2024 is the second event on the California Bluegrass Association’s calendar. Did you make it to the First??? Did you pick your fingers off at the Great 48 in Bakersfield? If so, you should be ready to pick them off again in Lodi, CA!!! Did your ears get their fill of music? If not, you should get ready to come to Lodi for the Spring Campout!

April 16 – 21, 2024 are the dates to come to Lodi. If you haven’t been before, this is what it is all about – Music, Friends, Laughter, Food, and More Music. The Lodi Grape Festival Grounds is an open area with some Electric/Water camping sites.  There is lots of open grassy areas to make your camp on as well. The whole area is filled with campers playing music day and night.

There is a variety of music styles found on site – Bluegrass, Old Time, Gospel, Americana, Folk, and Swing Jazz! Yes, that’s right. We have a faithful group of Jazz musicians that bring their instruments and they too love to play in Lodi!

Spring Campout is also when the CBA welcomes the California State Old Time Fiddle Association to join us in Lodi. They will be holding their 56th Annual Open Fiddle and Picking Championship!!! This event is so much fun to witness and participate in. There are prizes and trophies and lots of Music!!! Young, Old and In-Betweeners compete for two days to see how well they have progressed over the past year! You are welcome to compete too!!! They are always looking for more people to participate. For more info on their association please go to www.csotfa.org!!!! Join up and compete or Volunteer!

So, start getting prepared for the Spring Campout – make your play list, dust off your camping supplies, order new strings, pick three new tunes to learn by April, reach out to your friends to create a group camp (and let me know so I can save you a spot)!!!!

Watch for more info as we get closer. You can do that by reading the next Bluegrass Breakdown or going to CaliforniaBluegrass.org and then to Events! Or you can contact me – Deblivermore@gmail.com.

See you in April, if not before!!!! Bluegrass Life Rules!!!

Deb

Soar in 24!!!

“Soar in 24”! Flex your musical wings and fly high at the CBA’s Spring Campout 2024. Last year I thought being the “Best We in 23” sounded like a good idea. I hope you all were successful in finding your Best Me!!! This year the idea of being able to Soar in 24 came to mind. Time to loosen up the fingers, dust off the strings (and wings) and vocal cords, and enjoy music to it’s fullest! You can do that at the CBA’s Spring Campout 2024! April 16 – 21, 2024 in Lodi, CA.

Here are almost 24 things that you need to know about the Spring Campout!

  1. Clothing – bring all sorts! It can be cool, rainy, warm, sunny, and even hot!
  2. Ear plugs – you won’t always need these. It depends on where you’re camped. But if you end up in the “Late, loud, smoky crowd area”, you may want ear plugs at 3:00 in the morning.
  3. Camp stove – create some wonderful edibles to share with your friends, old and new!
  4. Instruments – bring instruments of all kinds – guitars, mandolin, fiddle, base, banjo, clarinet, flute, snare, piccolo, accordian!
  5. Beverages – bring your beverage of choice alcohol, non-alcohol, fizzy, water, wine. (If you forget your wine, don’t forget that Lodi is the wine capital of California!)
  6. Travel map – there are lots of things to see around Lodi. There are hiking trails around beautiful Lodi Lake. There are bike trails. There are wine trails. There are birds to look at. There’s downtown Lodi where you could find most anything that you need! And things you don’t need!
  7. Extra strings – Larry White, the “Thin Man”, brings an assortment of musical items that you might need – strings and pics. But just in case he doesn’t have what you need, make sure to pack at least two sets of strings because you are going to pick that instrument like crazy while you sore in 24 and you might need them!!!
  8. Band-Aids – for those sore fingers you could bring some Band-Aids but I prefer paper tape. You can pick up a roll of paper tape. It’s flexible, it’s thin, and you can still feel the strings! It works wonders.
  9. Camping equipment – no matter what style you have of camping, please be prepared. Car, van, tent camper, RV, sleeping bag under the truck, whatever – just be prepared.
  10. Music books – bring “The Really Good Book” and “The Equally Good Book”. One of the fun things to do in a jam is to open the book and pick a tune from that page! It’s a challenge but it can be really fun!
  11. Shampoo, Conditioner, and Soap – we have wonderful showers at the Lodi Grape Festival Grounds. Be prepared to take a nice long hot shower!!!!
  12. Coffee – bring coffee! You may need a cup around 6:00 p.m. to stay up until 3:00 a.m.!

Well…I said 24, but we only have room for half that many….so add to the list on your own!!! I’d like to know what you add….

I can’t wait to see you all for the CBA’s Spring Campout and the California State Old Time Fiddle Association’s 56th Open Fiddle and Picking Championship!

Waiting to Watch You Soar in 24!!!
