Rhys Jones and guitarist Susie Goehring

July 15 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Passing this along to those who need to know!!!
We are thrilled to announce a special outdoor performance by old-time legends fiddler Rhys Jones and guitarist Susie Goehring of the award-winning, world-renowned and much beloved old time string band BIGFOOT on July 15th! Rhys is known as a highly traditional fiddler with a distinctive and driving personal voice in his music, and his five albums have influenced generations of musicians. Susie Goehring is a living legend in old time music. Their tight playing and deep knowledge of the traditions of Appalachian music is conveyed in every piece, and in their hands even the simplest fiddle tune becomes a lovingly polished jewel with a history and a story. From old cowboy songs to driving dance tunes Rhys and Susie bring a virtuosity and passion to the old traditions which is rarely seen. Together Rhys and Susie have taught and performed around the world together for over a decade (and individually for longer than they care to discuss), including Augusta, Swannanoa, Mars Hill, Ashokan, Shasta, and music camps around the world.
In this extremely rare appearance on the West Coast, Rhys and Susie will perform an evening of old-time music and song. In addition, they will be joined by special surprise guests, fresh from a week together of stringband woodshedding in the Trinity Alps. We are honored to have Susie and Rhys for their first public performance in over two years.

And here’s Rhys winning the Clifftop Fiddle Competition in 2117!
Please email Sharon Khadder at [email protected] for address and questions. Show starts at 7pm.
Following the house concert, Rhys will be teaching 2 old-time fiddle workshops in North Berkeley, one on Saturday at 12pm (intermediate), and one on Sunday at 12pm (more advanced players).
The Saturday fiddle workshop will be an intermediate class to help you gain articulation, clarity and precision in bowing, using tunes from the repertoire of southern West Virginia and the Midwest as a basis for teaching. The workshop will explore common bowing patterns found in many tunes, and learning to apply them. Special attention will be given to improving control of rock-bows, pulses, drones and double stops while significantly expanding repertoire.
On Sunday, take a deep dive into the music of southern West Virginia and parts of the Midwest. This advanced workshop will focus on bringing out your own voice in fiddling while remaining true to the tradition. To strike this challenging balance, he will examine the nuances and details of a broad range tunes, learning to preserve the essential components of traditional style while expressing musical individuality. Attention will be focused on strengthening rhythm through efficient bow use, introducing variation, and learning how bowing choices can influence both rhythm and regional style.
Email [email protected] for workshop signup, address and other details. Or speak with Rhys directly at the house concert!
