North Country Blue, January 18th, Folsom Opry House, Folsom

This amazing young band (high school & college ages) North Country Blue is a joy to hear and watch on stage. Their affinity for each other, both musically and personally, is obvious and infectious. The range of their material is impressive — you never knows what’s coming next or who’s going to be singing it, all part of the band’s attraction. They’re quirky, unpredictable, fun, multifaceted . . . and mighty talented. The Band members are Tessa Schwartz on fiddle, Ida Winfree on mandolin, Megan January on bass, John Gooding on guitar, and Christine Willhoyte on banjo. All have “grown up” in bluegrass families and are committed to spreading bluegrass. This last year the band performed at several festivals —and then topped that off by reaching the finalist stage at the Rockygrass competition in Colorado and placing third. They are booked for several festivals in 2020, including the main stage at the CBA Father’s Day Festival.

Seating is limited, and admission is by donation of $20 for CBA members or $25 for non-members, all of which goes to the band. Make your reservations now at 916-990-0719 or [email protected], and send your check payable to Tessa Schwartz to John Hettinger, 113 Puffer Way, Folsom, 95630 (aka the Folsom Opry House). The concert is on Saturday, January 18, 7:30 PM (door at 7:00).

Rita Hosking Trio, January 18th, The Side Door, Sacramento

Northern California’s Rita Hosking sings of forest fires, culture clash, dishes, black holes and hope. An award-winning and prolific songwriter characterized as “here and now” by The Observer, she’s recently released her seventh album, For Real. Her stories, songs and soul-stirring, country-folk voice are partnered with multi-instrumentalist Sean Feder on dobro, banjo and guitar, and Bill Dakin on the upright bass. Together, they deliver what Acoustic Magazine calls “timeless, unhurried elegance.” Saturday, January 18th, 7 PM at The Side Door, 2900 Franklin Blvd, Sacramento. 916-442-8282, $20, tickets at

Special Consensus, January 18th, The Palms Playhouse, Winters

2018 GRAMMY NOMINEES The Special Consensus are a contemporary bluegrass band with four decades of experience. Their infec-tious sound is grounded in a deep appreciation and understanding of bluegrass music; it reminds people of the past but feels fresh and new. The band is led by banjo player Greg Cahill, recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), and includes Rick Faris (guitar), Dan Eubanks (bass) and Nate Burie (mandolin). Rick’s high, emotional singing soars above Nate’s fluid mandolin and Greg’s driving banjo, while Dan holds everything together on the bass. Their voices blend seamlessly. Palms Playhouse, 13 Main St, Winters, $22/$26 at door/Students $12, 530-795-1825,
