SUMMARY:Shelby Means Band @ Otter Opry
DESCRIPTION:Somebody extra special will be taking center stage at Otter Opry on Tuesday\, May 12th – none other than Shelby Means herself! Born in Kentucky and raised on Wyoming’s high plains\, Means is one of the foremost bassists in bluegrass\, with nearly two decades of experience in bluegrass\, folk\, rock\, Americana and country outfits. Together with Joel Timmons on guitar\, Jacob Means on mandolin\, and George Guthrie on banjo\, she’ll be making some mighty fine music right here in Monterey. \nMeans grew up playing bluegrass with her family\, moved to Nashville after college\, and has made a life and a living off her singular\, self-possessed approach to the upright bass. During her dozen years in Nashville\, she performed most notably as a member of the GRAMMY®-nominated all-women bluegrass band Della Mae. She later joined Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway on bass and vocals\, earning her first GRAMMY® win for their 2023 album\, City of Gold. \nShelby Means is a driving player with a singular stage presence and a magnetic\, centered approach to the upright bass. Beyond her work on the instrument\, she’s also an accomplished songwriter and a heartfelt vocalist whose voice is rooted in tradition while authentically her own. With her debut solo music\, Means invites listeners to experience the same soulful presence and adventurous spirit she has built her career on. \nThis is a bluegrass experience you won’t want to miss\, and you can make it even more special with roasted chicken dinner before the show ($15 in advance\, $20 after May 9th). Online sales will end at 11am the day of the performance. \nDinner: 5:30 – 6:30\, show at 7pm\nMonterey United Methodist Church\,\n1 Soledad Drive\, Monterey\, CA.\n$35/show (CBA members $30; 15 and under free).\nOnline ticket sales will end at noon on the day of the performance\nwww.otteropry.org

SUMMARY:Foghorn Stringband with Kinney & Johns at the Tower Theater
DESCRIPTION:FOGHORN STRINGBAND at the Tower Theater\nwith Kinney & Johns\nFoghorn Stringband is the present day gold standard for real-deal hard-hitting genuine old-time American string band music\, with eight albums\, thousands of shows\, over 25 years of touring under their belts\, and an entirely new generation of roots musicians following their lead. \nAmerican roots music is a diverse and never-ending well of inspiration\, and Foghorn Stringband continually and obsessively draws from old-time\, bluegrass\, classic country\, and Cajun music traditions in an ongoing quest to present a broad span of American historical music with an unparalleled youthful energy\, joy\, and virtuosity. \nThe Foghorn Stringband is comprised four master performers and historians: \nCaleb Klauder (vocals\, mandolin\, fiddle) – From Orcas Island\, Washington\nReeb Willms (vocals\, guitar) – From rural Farmer\, Washington\nNadine Landry (vocals\, upright bass) – From the Gaspé Coast\, Eastern Quebec\nStephen ‘Sammy’ Lind (vocals\, fiddle\, banjo) – From Minneapolis\, Minnesota \nEach member of Foghorn Stringband exemplifies the best of the roots music traditions from their respective native cultures. Caleb Klauder’s wistful\, keening vocals and rapidfire mandolin picking are as influenced by Southern roots music as much as they are by his upbringing in the sea islands of coastal Washington State. Reeb Willms hails from the wind swept Eastern farmlands of Washington. Her musical family and rural upbringing are are on display with every note she sings and every heart she breaks. Nadine Landry’s roots lie in the rural backroads of Acadian Québec\, and her high lonesome vocals have delighted audiences the world over. Her earth-shaking bass playing is the rumbling backbone of the Foghorn sound. Minnesotan Stephen ‘Sammy’ Lind\, simply put\, is the old-time fiddler of his generation whose tone and voice are as old as the same hills that gave birth to this music. Together\, these four have forged a sound like no other.
