A opening of the heart

Nov 24, 2017 | Welcome Column

On behalf of the California Bluegrass Association I’d like to wish all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Over the years, and especially in recent years, I’ve had a growing conviction that we bluegrassers have an extra reason to feel gratitude about our lives. Sure, there’s the music, with the heart and soul that sings out in it’s many, many variations and sub-genres and performance stylings. But I’m referring to a different, less tangible but far greater impact on our lives; it’s the enormous opening of our hearts and attitudes to members of the bluegrass community we’d never have met, much less become friends with. Like the guy floating above the street in Front of Macy’s. Without our special brand of Music, I’d never have met JD…and certainly wouldn’t have learned to love him.

My point is simply this. When I count my blessings each third Thursday of November, I never, ever fail to list Bill and Earl and Lester and Carter and, especially Ralph.
