Breaking News!

Jul 27, 2019 | Welcome Column

 Some of the truth is: the world has gone mad. It often feels like day is night and night is day. I couldn’t tell you anymore if fish are to swim upstream or down; or if songs are only to be heard, not sang. Every day we are bombarded by something—usually concerning, and because of all IT, we forget that there is more than the “Breaking News” we see on the television. There is more than difference to behold in the world; in our families; in our heads. Like miracles, “Breaking News” is smack-dab in front of us. Not everything has to be a miracle; not everything has to turn the earth on its axis; not every second of every-television-watching moment, do we need to be told there is breaking news. When in truth, the same news that was breaking at 9AM is usually the same news that is breaking at 7PM. Wouldn’t you agree?

I for one am weary; I turn on the television and my head spins; steam starts barreling from my ears and I hear a distant snorting, like a mad bull in the distance. I always wonder where and how close that bull is–as if I wake up in a new world every day–and then I finally come around to the truth: that mad bull is me. I get cranky; fed up. I look for answers, to which at that moment, there are none. And then usually within an hour, I start meandering toward the refrigerator. Well, I think I have figured out a way to stop that habit in its tracks.

Well, listen to this folks–as I speak out of both sides of my mouth–because there is another truth looming around the corner. I have been holding back. Yes, I have. And so today, my Blue-Grass Friends, I am hitting you with both barrels—my own breaking news (Now don’t you even think about changing that channel!!)

Breaking News!

Goats are in the meadow;
They jump with frolic, kind.
Pigs are flying cross the sky,
Entertaining all mankind.

Mama’s knitting sweaters
For all the babies born;
And August is a comin’
With her bounty of sweet corn.

Breaking News!
Loretta had her babies;
Raccoons are in a row;
Robins in the bird bath;
Stellars counting Crows.
LucyBelle is barking,
At the Changing of her Guards
For her Kingdom is a-waiting
And that Kingdom is her yard.

Breaking News!

Banjos in the distance; Ukuleles on the lake;
Toasting up the sour dough; For a lobster bake.
Children lighting sparklers– To compete against the stars–
While Auntie’s singing oldies,
And Uncle smokes cigars.

Breaking News!

Sunshine’s flowing through the leaves;
With a breeze to cool us down;
I got my hair cut short today;
And now shopping for my crown.
I got a pedicure: My toesies pretty pink–
And I’m tired of the worldly news–
It’s why I write with my own ink.

Breaking News!

The clouds are calling down to us:
“We’re not here just for rain;
We offer up some healing shade
To lessen any pain.”
Our neighbors gather, laughing:
Marco Polo’s in their pool.
And I found the perfect aqua
To paint the vestibule.

Breaking News!
I just blew up the TV, It’s of no use to me.
I’ll watch the world as it unfolds,
While I sail across the sea:
And count the seagulls in the sky;
And swim with dolphins, fair;
Then I’ll grill me up some mussels,
While drinking wine without a care.

Breaking News!
The stars all sparkle in the night
They say they’re there for me.
The moon sings sweeter lullabies
While swinging from a tree.
Anger can be muted
When drinking champagne from a trough.
And if a light shines brightly
You can turn that bright light off.

Breaking News!
Each morning has a dawning;
Each evening has its moon.
Now you’re the latest breaking news
‘Cause you dance to your own tune.
Shake your fist up toward the sky;
And smile down on life:
Remembering there’s more to news
Than another’s daily strife.
So, cast the runes before you;
Let the Sirens scream;
Cut the Kraken’s tethers;
Life’s more than just a dream:
It’s dancing in the moon light;
It’s smooching on the couch;
Not all the news that’s breaking
Has to be an ouch.
