The Lost and Found band started in 1973 with the original lineup of Allen Mills, Gene Parker, Dempsey Young, and Roger Handy. The band remained a popular band in bluegrass and in 2013, they recorded songs with Sammy Shelor as engineer. The members on the recording are Allen Mills, Ron Smith, Dan Wells, Scott Napier, and Allen’s nephew Jason Moore on bass. Dempsey Young also appears on the last song, “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” Allen developed back issues after the recording and could not continue as band leader and lead singer. The orginal recordings were discovered recently and it is perhaps fitting that they are being released in 2023, 50 years after the band started its bluegrass journey.
Allen’s warm lead vocals and the band’s blended harmonies shine in the opening song, “Dreamer’s Hill,” followed by Dan’s original song “Giving Up on You.” The song also features Ron’s banjo leading the way, as the song proclaims freedom from a love who has been cheating and lying. Dan also wrote “Who Will You Call,” another goodbye song with a warning that “your prince will turn into a frog.” Alan co-wrote the tribute to the “Mountain Folks” who live through hard times with a hound dog, biscuits and some taters. Dolly Parton wrote “Put It Off Until Tomorrow” and Dempsey Young is featured on this older recording. Scotty Sparks adds the heartfelt lead vocal plea for departing the next day since “you hurt me enough today.” Another album highlight is the instrumental version of the classic “How Great Thou Art.” This is a great reminder of the great music of a classic band.
