Mohavisoul likes to define their sound as “original contemporary bluegrass from the soul, rooted in folk and Americana.” While that may cover a lot of territory, the band’s songs, mostly written by band co-founders Randy Hanson and Mark Miller, pay homage to the classic themes of loves lost and found, fickle fate and irony, a gypsy wandering soul, and the joys of owning a dog or several. Band members are Randy Hanson on mandolin, Mark Miller on guitar, Jason Weiss on banjo, Dan Sankey on fiddle, and Ron Bostwick on bass. Their musical blend is seamless with all five taking instrumental leads and trading solo licks. Original songs from band members are featured with some covers of some classic songs.

“The Way” comes from Tony Scalzo of the punk band Fastball. The story focuses on a family that packs up and starts going down the road to an unmentioned fate. The album pictures a sign for Zzyzx and the music weaves around Dan’s fiddle as it meanders into gypsy patterns. Mark sings the lead vocal on Chris Stapleton’s love song “To Be With You Again” and he captures some of the glow of the Steeldrivers sound. Jason’s banjo opens “Prisoner’s Song” with the wistful hope that his love will meet him in the moonlight embellished with Dan’s fiddle and Randy’s mandolin.
