Foibles, Bon Mots, and Thoughts for October

Oct 2, 2020 | Welcome Column

It’s glorious October. My Giants gave it a good run but looks like we will have to wait until next year. Of course that is optimistic looking around at the fires, pandemic, hurricanes, etc.  But on the brighter side my SF 49ers with half of their players inured at the Giants game on nasty artificial turf in the Big Apple are playing like a gang of hungry kids looking to be the toast of the town. I watched a complete game last week for the first time in about five years. It was well worth it.

Now to make you all smile. I know there is at least one or two of you reading my column because Rick told  me. If you need a giggle, a guffaw, or something to make your realize there is something worse than the world situation we  are all in go on you tube and click on the wonderfully insane “Lucy in the Sky in Diamonds” by the velvet throated William Shatner, aka Captain James T. Kirk.

I heard the song a couple of days ago and it creates a whole new category of musical genre. I don’t know what it would be but  somewhere in space and time  such a place exists. Give it a try. You owe yourself this opportunity for three minutes of unbridled atonal musical anarchy.

Going from the insane to something a little more practical and fulfilling to listen to is the great local talent Tony Furtado. The past couple of weeks I have been listening to his “Within Reach” CD 1992. I get in my raft, I turn off my mind and float down stream ( per JWL)  in my cherished back yard pool. His energetic banjo playing is a delight.  “Within Reach” is  a gem. What makes it absolutely a must to listen to  is the sweetest version ever of “I Will” by the Beatles, performed by Allison Krause. The song creates  mellowness and a sense of peace over me  every time I listen to her beautiful voice. A wonderful, wonderful song. Thank you.

My computer is on life support and I don’t know how long before I have to pull the plug. It  takes ten minutes to wake up another ten to locate the program you want an another ten if you want to print something. Hopefully you will get today’s column because a very special event is happening in just a few short days.

My niece the wonderfully gifted Megan Lynch Chowning has put together an assortment of her favorite waltzes for your listening enjoyment on her aptly titled new CD  “Born at Night.” I don’t  really know what aptly titled means but important writers often use that phrase  and well sometimes it is fun to pretend.

Megan’s new CD is just that. Megan by herself, playing various waltzes. There are 12 songs  on the CD that cover the waltz genre. There is  Bill Monroe’s “Lonesome Moonlight Waltz,   Kenny Baker’s “Marsha’s Waltz”  Merle Travis’s “Dance of the Goldenrod”  just to name a few.

During this crazy pandemic listen to some wonderful waltzes by one of the top elite fiddle players anywhere. Give yourself a treat and pick up the CD. “Born at Night” can be a  great Thanksgiving after dinner treat, Christmas stocking stuffer, or present, New Years Thank God 2020 has left ,Thank You  Very Much  gift, Yom Kippur celebration gift, the list goes on. Listen to  “Born at Night “  and enjoy Megan’s excellent musicianship and the tranquillity it brings. It is a  wonderful way to to visualize better days.

Until November 6: Red a book, hug a child, pet a dog, stroke a cat, and eat at least one box of Sees Chocolate.
