Foibles,Bon Mots, and Thoughts

Jul 3, 2020 | Welcome Column

“Imagination was given to a man to  compensate him for what he isn’t…

A sense of humor was provided to console him for what he is.”

Horace Walpole

Hats of to Joe Weed on his wonderful worldwide waltz he put on line for all of us to watch, hear, and enjoy. Really an excellent job! Thank you. You brought a lot of smiles to our quarantined faces.

July was originally the month of Qunitillis in the Roman calendar. It was the fifth month of the year until January and February were added in 450 B.C.

It got its original name for the Latin word for fifth. Later the name was changed to Julius in honor of Julius Caesar who was born on July 12 . (a Moon Child like today’s columnist)

July…  Ruby is the birthstone while Larkspur and water lily are the flowers.

Cancer and Leo are the astrological signs. Go Moon children and Lions.

The Dog Days begin in early July. Baseball players are more than familiar with the dreaded dog days of summer.

July is sometimes called the Hay Month because the grass dries out due to lack of rain and can be made into hay.

July is National Hot Dog Month and National Ice Cream Month. Unfortunately there will be no Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest this year at Coney Island. Hopefully the sun will rise tomorrow.July 3 is the fisherman’s holiday in the Marshall Islands.July 3 was the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg 1863.

July Birthdays: Youngest daughter Rhiannon Amelia, Grandson Zachary, Big sister Maria Elena ,best friend Bill,  and best buds Julius C. and my beloved United States of America.

Speaking of birthdays. My lovely older sister, Maria Elena will be celebrating her 75th on July 14.That is ten years and some change in dog years. She deserves something really special. I had purchased a trip around the world for her on a really cool cruise line but then the pandemic hit. Not discouraged I bought tickets to at least one baseball game in every stadium in the MLB. Then the pandemic hit.  Still not discouraged. Maria had never seen a Seinfeld episode so I had my people contact Jerry’s people to make arrangements for Jerry to personally fly out to California with some of his personal best DVD’s of his show to view with my sister and hubby Cap’n Bill. Then the pandemic hit. Feeling a bit discouragedI figured I would go on line and purchase her a fancy bottle of Scotch. She loves Cutty Sark so I figured to find a fancy 100 year old bottle for her. The best  I could come up with was a bottle called Prohibition Scotch, a 100 proof special blend that had to be shipped all the way from a little village in Scotland called Hamidnash Manor. I do have to add  I was torn between purchasing the Prohibition Cutty Sark and a REALLY special bottle of Macallan 30 year old  Scotch on sale for a mere $7,000.00. My big sister certainly deserves the Macallan  so I made the decision.  I clicked the” buy” button  but  sadly the “sold out” icon flashed. Sometimes you can’t win for losing. Sorry Maria, but you will enjoy the Prohibition Cutty. You should be getting it by Labor Day.

June supplies all the necessary pre party set up for summer fun which July has full ownership on. Vacations, grilling steaks, camp outs, trips, water skiing, ball games, hiking, lazing in the grass etc. July stands tall and alone as the premier month of the year. Of course we will have to wait until next year to enjoy all what July can offer us. Maybe by next July we will be not be looking like the Lone Ranger and walking around with dazed looks on our faces.

Of course as July draws to an end the fear and trepidation of August looms lurking with a menacing smile because we  all know what she brings to the table. Back to school sales, end of vacations, the REAL dog days of summer and a host of other humid hot sticky situations that are just kind of a drag. I believe August was named after another Roman but we will come to him  later.  A  quick aside. It frustrates me that  there are no months named after Portuguese men or women. Why is that? Could the  answer be  blowing in the Azorean wind.

What the hell.  I dub July as the  National Fave Bean  and Linguica  month and co name July, Maritza who is  the most beautiful Fado singer in the world.

Until  Friday  August  7.
