Kathy Kallick has been a mainstay of the Bay Area bluegrass and Americana scene and her solo and band album releases have given her fans delight and insight in her
world and the world around us. Kathy has been able to capture a child’s world (Use A Napkin Not Your Mom), the urban life style (Between the Hollow and the High Rise), and the emotions of love and relationships. With the world slowly emerging from the financial and emotional hardships of the pandemic, Kathy has captured our times with the bluegrass catchword lonesome. For musicians who perform for
audiences in a group effort, isolation was the worse kind of lonesome. With more time to develop individually, the band members have come forward with new songs and skills. The three instrumentals on the album give Tom Bekeny’s mandolin, Greg Booth’s dobro, and Annie Staninec’s fiddle an opportunity to soar. Annie is also featured vocally in the Osborne Brothers’ “A Lonesome Feeling.”
“It’s Lonesome Everywhere I Go” is one of six Kallick originals, and it is delivered by Kathy and Annie in a classic brothers duet style. Combating loneliness with the shared experience of shared listening of the radio (or archived show or podcast in these times) harkens back to the time when families sat around the radio shows at night. Several bluegrass musicians passed away during the last few years and Kathy
wrote “This Old Lonesome Song” to the memory of Tony Rice but it also is a reminder of the memories we have when someone passes. William Golden’s “A
Beautiful Life” is an uplifting gospel song and the harmony vocals of Kathy, Annie,Tom and Greg add a unity and balance to a superb song collection. Shared music can inspire, unite, and uplift, and the Kathy Kallick Band has given us a beautiful gift.
