Many Hands Many Hands

May 1, 2019 | Welcome Column

I was going to title this Welcome Message “Mayday! Mayday!”, but that seemed overly dramatic!

The CBA is not the only non-profit I help out with. I’m also on the Board of Directors for the John Muir Association. Just as the CBA has the Father’s Day Festival as their biggest annual event, the JMA holds an annual John Muir Birthday/Earth Day celebration at the John Muir National Historical Site in Martinez.

Both events are complex, and designed to be fun, interactive, informative and to further the missions of their respective organizations. And both need volunteers to keep all the moving parts in place and ensure a really positive visitor experience.

Irrespective of my involvement on Boards of Directors, I have volunteered at a number of regular events in my home town – various festivals and parades among them. It’s a great way to really be involved in the event, while helping it happen. On short events, the volunteer shift may last the duration of the event, but for longer events, the shifts are for only a portion of the event, and allows me to participate freely once my time commitments are up.

The Father’s Day Festival is like this – you can volunteer to help, and work a few hours a day and make a huge difference. The perennial challenge is getting enough volunteers. If you’re going to be there for 3 or 4 days, it should be easy to agree to about 4 hours a day around the festival. None of the jobs are terribly hard – most are big fun, actually – and the more of us that volunteer, the easier the work gets. Many hands make for light work, says the old axiom.

Please, look into your heart and mind and seriously consider volunteering to help at the upcoming Father’s Day Festival – it’ll be greatly appreciated, you’ll have fun, make some new friends and get the deep satisfaction that comes from making a difference.
