Merry Volunteers

Jun 20, 2018 | Welcome Column

Still enjoying that post-Father’s Day Festival glow. It means so much to participate in this even year after year, and from what I could see, this was a good year.

I assume most of you are still glowing, to some degree. May I impose on your glow to strongly suggest you consider participating in this event, and the California Bluegrass Association, in more depth?
It shouldn’t surprise anyone to learn that an extraordinary amount of time and effort goes into mounting the annual Father’s Day Festival – both in advance planning and preparation, and in real-time tasks during the festival.
It may or may not surprise you to learn that like almost every non-profit organization, we’re always hungry for volunteers. We’re not hungry because there’s more work every year, but the volunteers we do have are working much harder than they would have to if more people volunteered. Manys hand makes for light work, goes the old axiom, and it is certainly true.
Maybe you aren’t aware of this – volunteering does not detract from the fun you have at Grass Valley, it adds to it. You meet people you wouldn’t otherwise meet, and see the whole event from a fresh perspective. And you get a deep satisfaction as you realize it really is YOUR festival and you helped make it a success.
Obviously, not everyone has the time, the energy or the inclination to volunteer. Some folks think they don’t have the time, but 3 shifts of 4 hours over 4 days is a pretty easy burden to bear, and it helps tremendously.
I happened to meet a few people who , of their own accord, asked me how they can help, and I will be following up with them to learn more about their skill sets, and make sure I can hook them up with the right people in the CBA.
The end result will be something you should also consider – you won’t just be attending the Father’s Day Festival – you’ll be an integral part it.
So, relax now, enjoy the post-festival glow. Think back on the fun you had, and enjoy the pictures you took. But let the notion of stepping up your involvement wash over you, too, and consider being a volunteer with the CBA.
Have a look at the team at www.cbaweb.org/About/GeneralTeam – maybe you can help some of these people?
