Missing My Buds

Jun 21, 2020 | Welcome Column

By the time you read this we will have moved on from the TYRO virtual FDF and will be thinking about next year’s FDF and other festivals to come.. We’ll be moving from the tease of June to the gut of summer with long languid days hot, maybe humid days, but alas without the pleasure of a Lazy Dog ice cream bar. I never had to wait for August to roll around to justify my twice a day habit LD habit. By mid-morning festival week I would normally be lining up in front of the Lazy Dog trailer trying to decide on a dark chocolate or a milk chocolate mint ice cream bar. But more so, I’d already be sleepy from jamming late and maybe indulging in tasting my friends’ Bourbon selections. This month I have to finish the online voting project to present to the CBA Board. If you would like to speak to the board or listen in please pay attention to the calendar on the cbaweb.org splash page. We will post the time, date and login for electronic board meeting, or where the meeting will be if it is in-person. Even with in-person meetings we will have a way for you to attend electronically…so there ain’t a lot of excuses not to acquaint yourself with how California Bluegrass Association policies…errr sausages are made.

Speaking of sausages….it is time to start recruiting ya’ll to run for the board. We will sending out an email blast shortly and posting on the CBA web page and social media with instructions on how to get on the ballot and run, and posting a description of what is expected of board members. Please consider becoming a board member…it is a lot of work, but very rewarding. If you have any questions please reach out to me directly and I will be more than happy to fill you in. Try me at geoffsargent@californiabluegrass.net .

With all this technology that would allow you to attend a CBA board meeting, on this Father’s day we can all video conference with any and all family members, almost where ever they are. That’s what I had the pleasure of doing this morning with my three brothers, my two nephews, my grand-nephew, my nephew’s dog, my mom, and video conferencing in my dad from his nursing home bed. One of my brothers and his clan of nephews, grand nephew and dog set up camp outside my father’s window and provided the usual Sargent circus complete with flying children, barking dogs, and multiple stream-of-consciousness conversations. Kurt Vonnegut and Shakespeare never could match this for entertainment value. And we all were able to wish my father a happy Father’s day, something we haven’t done together for decades. Happy Father’s day to all you dads and brothers where ever you may be, festival, circus, or no.

I’ll leave you with a Louis Armstrong quote that applies to Bluegrass music “There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind”. Miss ya’ll!
