My Jam is Growing Up!

Nov 13, 2019 | Welcome Column

In January of this year, I launched a monthly bluegrass jam, on the first Sunday of each month at Bonehead’s BBQ in Lafayette, CA. Contra Costa County had not had a regular bluegrass jam in a while, which stuck in my craw a little, being the Area VP for that region.

I had played at this BBQ joint before and I knew the owner was a music lover, and he readily agreed. He had ample room and Sundays were often a little slow in the afternoon. So we launched the thing.
I have written columns before, about the difficulties I encountered. Some prospective players insisted I rule with an iron hand with regards to the purity of the bluegrass being played.
Some players were afraid the other players might be too good, so they stayed away. Some players feared the other players might not be good enough so they stayed away. Some players worried the jam would be too large, so they stayed away. Some players worried the jam wouldn’t be big enough, so they stayed away. And all of this made ME worry.
Indeed, some nights the jam was too small. And once in a while, it was a little too large.
But the last few months (knock on wood) it has found an equilibrium. A pattern has emerged – there are some regulars (including some of the initial worry-worts), and most months, there are a few newcomers, so the music is taking on a comfortable feel – we expect there to be pretty good music and by golly, it is happening! Nobody can come every month, of course, but we seem to have a workable quorum on any given month.
2019 is racing by, but I am optimistic that this jam is gonna work, now. And the event is providing some fun music for the restaurants patrons, too – it’s always fun to watch people see how powerful totally acoustic music can be. Fingers are crossed that this jam will continue on
Maybe you’ll want to stop by – first Sunday of the month, at Bonehead’s Texas BBQ in Lafayette, from 5-7pm. Address is 3422 Mt. Diablo Blvd. The food is truly excellent and so is the pickin’! Please feel free to email me with questions – my email address is brewgrasser @ gmail.com.
We also post something on Facebook each month.
