This world is not my home, I’m just passing through
My troubles and my trials somewhere beyond the blue
Many friends and loved ones have gone on before
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore
I don’t know about the rest of you but this world we find ourselves in now has gotten so crazy I don’t understand it at all. At some point thought I sort of understood the world I was born into. That was a long time ago. Alas, the Zeitgeist has passed me by.
We now live in a world where social interaction takes place through electronic devices. Even I do that now, the habit is so pervasive. But sometimes the new normal is not normal. Should we really be texting a family member about something important because it’s easier than walking up the stairs and talking to them eye to eye?
I think a lot of people gravitate to the music the CBA supports because it hearkens back to a simpler more connected social society. At least that’s the myth. Make no mistake, people have always found ways to behave badly:
Poor Ellen Smith. How was she found?
Shot through the heart lying cold on the ground
So the world our music describes is far from idyllic but at least it is understandable. It’s mostly basic physical human interaction. No phishing scams to worry about, false identities, deep fake videos, etc.
Just look how this world has made a change(made a change)
Just look how this world has made a change(made a change)
You can see every day how the people pass away
Look how this world has made a change
This world is not my home. But can I still feel at home in this world anymore? Of course. The world I grew up in and came to know pretty well was not the home my parents knew either. And I have confidence that going forward our young people can figure it out. In forty years they will probably feel the same sense of disorientation we baby boomers feel now.
Can this whole world be saved?
Have we gone too far? Is it too late?
Have we reached the point of no return?
Lord what will it take? Will we ever learn?
Just look at our next generation of young people who play bluegrass music and you get the sense that the next generation will do fine even in this crazy new world which changes so rapidly. The industrial revolution changed the world forever and change seems to have been accelerating ever since.
Boomers like me worried about the Cold War but somehow we survived it. Now boomers worry about our kids, our grandkids and maybe the climate crisis. Can the next generation handle it? I think so.
