Perspectives

Events of the past few months threaten our desire to view the world as a welcoming place.

We have recently seen how viciously our species can treat each other, and we have seen how nature can seem bent on cruelty towards all living things.
We feel small, powerless and threatened.
But in the face of deadly forces, some from within our own kind, and some from our own planet, we also see how caring people can be. Heroes are all around us, and extraordinary acts of compassion become apparent.
It’s important to understand the ratios at work here. Nearly all people are caring and kind. Nearly all people are capable of acts of great altruism and bravery.
So, it’s vital that we not give in to feelings of hopelessness and despair. Direct energies towards helping those who are suffering the most. Let’s help them with our energies and resources, let’s be there for them as they cope with their losses.
And as our friends, families and fellow humans begin to heal, as best they can, we can get back to embracing the parts of life that bring us the most joy. Yes, music, laughter and good times will return – believe it. Do what you can to hasten the process.
