Bluegrass Signal PLAYLISTS

Please visit the Bluegrass Signal website for the the September, October, and November, 2022 playlists — and all the others!

Sully spins ’em on the 4th Saturday of each month — except December, when she’ll have a New Year’s Eve special! — on KALW. She also hosts a weekly show on Bluegrass Country.

For almost a decade, The Local Honeys — Linda Jean Stokley and Montana Hobbs — have been an integral part of the Kentucky musicscape. Whether it’s the incredibly powerful duo — two great voices, enhanced by their soulful duets, accompanied by stellar banjo, fiddle, and guitar — or a full band setting, The Local Honeys present a compelling mix of music that honors traditions and creates new ones.

Their songs, says Montana, “are about what we know, reflections of us as people. We realized we have the power to add our own narrative into Kentucky music.” Reflecting on their latest collection, Linda notes, “Songwriting can freeze people in time like a photograph, preserving little nuances particular to specific cultures and I love that.”

They won the 2017 Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merlefest for the anti-strip mining song, “Cigarette Trees,” a number that’s as fine as anything I’ve heard in the last decade. They’ve worked tirelessly to educate audiences about the issues facing their region of Appalachia, and have been active in raising funds for flood relief in their native state.

On Nov. 16, The Local Honeys are appearing at Menlo Park’s Guild Theatre in a show billed as Appalshop: A Fundraiser to Benefit Appalachian Artists’ Flood Relief.

Tickets and more information HERE

Their band bio actually got it right:

“The Local Honeys come from a long line of storytellers, a lineage of strong Kentucky women who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is. The narratives and landscapes they weave into song, the deep understanding and love they share for old time traditions, their undeniable charisma and charm, and their blatant disregard to follow the rules make it clear the duo is poised to become not only the defining voices of their home state of Kentucky but the defining voices of a new Appalachia.”

HERE‘s a video of them doing “Cigarette Trees;” see if you don’t agree with me!

And … This video is 15 min. long, but well worth a watch. It informs us about the struggles of living in Appalachian coal country — and the plight of the Troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Company, a vital program that has been saving lives by offering purpose and community to those in recovery from opioid addiction which was destroyed by the July/22 flooding in eastern Kentucky. It concludes with The Local Honeys performing “Dying To Make A Living.”
