Phil Salazar New Video and Playing Hardly Strictly Bluegrass

Sep 27, 2022 | Welcome Column

It’s been a big month for Phil Salazar & the Kin Folk, a California bluegrass favorite in both their native Southern Cal and Northern California festival favorites. Not only did they release a single and video called Shady Groove which is a progressive re-make of the legendary old-time tune Shady Grove with legendary Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, but they also have been invited to play at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco. The band, making its first appearance at the festival will be playing Saturday, October 1 at 11 AM on the Porch Stage.

To the uninitiated, Phil Salazar besides leading his band the Kin Folk, for years has played with many high-profile artists including Kix Brooks of Brooks and Dunn, Dwight Yoakam, Jimmy Buffet, Peter Wernick, Chris Hillman, David Grisman, Kenny Loggins, Jay Ungar, Kate Wolf, and more.
Phil has known and played with Bob Weir for 25 years. He had this to say about his version of the song which he calls Shady Groove.

“I’ve been playing and have recorded Shady Grove for forty years, one day, just daydreaming I came up with this groovy arrangement and decided to record it. It was so cool I decided to shoot this video and was thrilled to get Bobby to play on it”
