This is a “hands on and let’s play” class focusing on how to play effective back-up and great sounding bluegrass banjo solos, even on songs that you’re hearing for the first time. We’ll get started by understanding how bluegrass songs are put together (hearing chord progressions and song form) and we’ll move on to explore how to support others with back-up that includes vamping, roll patterns, down- and up-the-neck techniques. We’ll then integrate roll patterns and classic licks to create our own melody-based solos in Scruggs-style and we’ll even cover melodic and single-string banjo technique as well as playing in different keys. Tab handouts will be provided but we’ll also try to use our eyes and ears as much as possible in this class. Student requests are welcome!
