Dobro 2-3

In class, we’ll work together on the skills and strategies you need to find and figure out your own approach to bluegrass, folk, and country songs to help you feel more confident at your next jam. Being able to play the melody to any song in all keys is the most important factor in confidence on a Dobro and is easier than you might think! We’ll improve and put into practice the following: picking and barring technique; connecting the fretboard, chord progressions and how to strategize playing over them, finding melodies using chord tones and scales, embellishing melodies with ornaments, syncopation, how to create a practice regime, and finally we will look at the do’s and don’ts of backing up a vocalist. You will be playing in this hands-on class. You’ll leave camp with plenty to work on in the months and even year ahead. I am very patient and non-judgmental when it comes to learning this instrument. Some take home handouts will be provided.

Prerequisites:

Know your major scales, be comfortable with fingerpicks and the bar, and have some experience trying to find melodies and/or playing backup on bluegrass or Bluegrass-related music in any key. You have a basic understanding of the instrument and have the locations of the straight-bar chords in G major tuning memorized. Work on scales before class begins! We will be learning by ear versus tablature. There will be more than one level of ability in this class, so be prepared to listen and try out new things!

Bring:

  • Resophonic guitar correctly set up in good working condition and in the tuning of GBDGBD
  • A good tone bar, picks and, if possible, a Dobro capo
