Spring Has Sprung

Mar 30, 2022 | Welcome Column

Springtime is near my darlin’  … and I’m counting now the days. (Bill Monroe)

Living in California sure makes it easier when it gets down to saying goodbye to Old Man Winter. Compared to my years living back east, out here the winter hardly ever even comes:

It’s not cold, it’s just Minnesota magic.
You don’t mind the weather ‘cause the wind don’t blow.
Don’t give up. If we all stick together.
We can make it to the springtime when it’s warm enough to snow

I’ve never suffered through a Minnesota winter like Si Kahn, who wrote those lyrics, but when I lived in New England it seemed that nice spring weather would never come. The ground thaws, snow banks melt and then you get slammed by a cruel storm just when your hopes had been elevating. But when you see the crocuses bloom you realize you might actually survive.

Oh yes! There is no mistaking it. Spring is finally here! We’ve set our clocks ahead to start our day an hour earlier than we’re used to. We may not have to do that in the future thanks to new legislation. I’m thankful for the sleep disruption avoided in the future but I’ll miss that extra hour of sleep in the fall. An interesting book I just read by a UC, Berkeley neuroscientist (Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker) makes a strong case that high school students would do better with a later start time for classes. Maybe springing forward in time is not such a good thing. And maybe we should have that lost hour of weekend returned this autumn. Hard working, sleep starved workers and students deserve it!

There’s so much to do now and the sap is rising. We should get an early start. Hopefully the pandemic is lessening its grip and it’s an especially nice gift to be able to get outside and socialize with others listening to or playing music together without worrying all the time.

When the springtime comes on the mountain
And the wildflowers are scattered o’er the plain
I will watch for the leaves to return to the trees
I’ll be waiting when the springtime comes again

The spring will always be my favorite time of year. All the dark cold days are behind us and we have a whole year of longer days and more comfortable weather to look forward to. When I took my dog out for her morning constitutional this morning, she sniffed around our apple tree and I noticed the nice buds on the tips of the branches. We need more rain but everything is green and I went for a nice bike ride today in the warm air fragrant with pollen.

Oh, I wish I was a lizard in the spring
Yes, I wish I was a lizard in the spring
If I’se a lizard in the spring, I’d hear my darling sing
And I wish I was a lizard in the spring

Springtime will always be my favorite season. It starts a year of everthing but winter (until winter actually comes). If I could live in a clime where it was springtime all year long I would be in heaven.

When the roses have bloomed in my garden.
I’ll be gathering flowers in the fields of green.
Before the fields are green, before the robin sings.
I’ll be gone to be with Jesus come spring

Lest we forget, spring is the time for romance. May it always be so.

And tell me that you still love me And that your heart is still true.
When the spring roses are blooming Then I’ll come back to you

Many people I meet say they love a particular place they live because it has all four seasons.

Some folks the summertime when they can walk about.
Strolling through the meadow green it’s pleasant there’s no doubt.
But give me the wintertime when the snow is on the ground.
For I found her when the snow on the ground

Most of those same people I’ve met still complain about winter though! I have never heard anyone complain about a beautiful spring. Enjoy!
