Ten Items or Fewer

Sep 1, 2017 | Welcome Column

A sad goodbye to Sunshine. You will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lou and the family.

It has been a long six months since our house flooded due to a faulty part on a washing machine. Today the last piece of tile has been cut and placed, the tiled floor has been grouted and the sealant has been applied. Sheila can’t stop smiling. Having her house in disarray has made her an unhappy camper.

Sheila and I have about ten hours of unpacking to do. Boxes and boxes of books, pictures, records,CD’S, tons of toys for the grandchildren, all that fine china we never use that needs to be carefully unpacked and then placed inside the cabinet that has to be brought in from the garage. This is done the old fashioned way,one box at a time. Oh my. And we couldn’t have better weather while we do it. Our garage is topping out at about 115 degrees making the back and forth box carrying from garage to home necessary for Sheila and I to ingest salt tablets. A couple more days and we will be able to park our car in the garage where it belongs and all will be right in our little burg of paradise.

We are pressed for time because this Sunday we will be celebrating our oldest grandson’s 11th birthday. He entered sixth grade this past Wednesday, his brother started second grade, our grandson in Woodland entered third grade last week and his sister, our only granddaughter started pre-kindergarten. Little Zachary, our two month old ,has a few years to relax before he dons his backpack and takes off to school.Five  beautiful grandchildren, ages 2 months to 11 years old accompanied by our two daughters and our two son in laws.Where does the time go?

Our hearts go out to all those suffering in Texas. Rainfall in biblical proportions has fallen on Houston and outlying areas this past week. It was said that Houston received a years worth of California’s last years deluge in three days. And more rain is coming. It will take years to recover from this natural disaster.Lives and homes will need to be rebuilt and hopefully the government will be there to extend a non partisan helping hand. Lord knows now is the time for all of us to get to work and help out.

While we are on the subject of biblical proportions. My beloved SF Giants are 40 games behind the dreaded LA Blue Meanies. You read that right,40 games. Thats 360 innings of baseball ,a good 120 hours of baseball viewing,50 or more hot dogs, as many beers as you can afford for $13-15 a beer and there you have it. What happened to the Giants? A case could be made utilizing various reasons for this debacle, but in the end the other team scored more runs than us, our offense was anemic, starting pitching was fair at best, and the bullpen had problems. It will be a busy off season and a lot of the familiar faces probably will not be wearing the Giants black and orange next year. For those who will be leaving, thanks for the memories and we wish you well.

I heard or saw it somewhere that Mr. Cornish has a new book coming out. I believe this one is not filled with Rick’s acute satirical wit but instead a mellowed out book of music (bluegrass) based (read banjo) cartoons and sly observances by our own Mr. C. I also have good knowledge that the health of Mr. Cornish has improved so much that he is able to hitch up his cows, Bessie and Eunice, to his plow and begin tilling the north forty. In the background,on their deck, lovely wife Lynn is busily capturing the scene with her paintbrush.

If some of you remember way back 2007-2008 the United States went through something called “The Housing Crisis.” Loans defaulted, people lost their homes, the stock market crashed and it was 1929 all over again again.“The Big Short,” was made a couple of years back (nominated for an Academy Award). It is on Netflix and can be streamed. If you were curious how this whole thing started, and who the bad guys and good guys were check it out. Wonderful performances by the entire cast.

Until October, read a book,  hug a child, pet a dog, stroke a cat, eat a bar of chocolate and IKIRU….
