Item 1: It is October and you all know what that means. SF Giants Orange and Black Baseball playoffs!!!!!
Take a deep breath and sing along with me to the official SF Giants song. ”It’s Bye Bye Baby!”
One, two three….
When the Giants come to town, it’s Bye-Bye Baby
Every time the chips are down, it’s Bye-Bye Baby
History’s in the making at Candlestick Park
Cheer for the batter, and light the spark
If you’re a fan of Giants baseball, sing Bye-Bye Baby!
If you want to be in first place, call Bye-Bye Baby!
Listen to the broadcast on KSFO
Turn up the volume, and hear ‘em go
With the San Francisco Giants, it’s Bye-Bye Baby!
Item 2: My middle grandson who is in the first grade had to have three teeth pulled yesterday. He wasn’t too excited about having that done. His older brother who is in fifth grade had gone to the same dentist earlier and had a tooth pulled with the benefit of nitrous oxide.
Younger brother was told he was going to have nitrous oxide like big brother and that should make everything a little bit better. He said he didn’t want to breathe in all that smelly gas and he would not go to the dentist. Older brother trying to help told him that the nitrous oxide smelled like,” Pink and blue glitter.” Good job older brother. That is exactly how Rick described it to his dentist.
Item 3: Clown sightings in Modesto and around the United States as citizens wonder what has become of society. Somewhere out there Pagliacci is looking for his relatives.
Item 4: September 11, 2016 was our anniversary (45th). Sheila and I decided to finally make that trip overseas to England and Ireland. So in honor or our anniversary we booked our cruise; departing from Southampton London, on to Guernsey, Channel Islands, Cork,(Ireland),Liverpool,Belfast, Glasgow,Inverness/Loch Ness,Edinburgh, and last stop Normandy, France then back to Southampton. We’ll get a chance to visit Ireland if only for a couple of days but something both of us have wanted to do for a long long time. It will be our first major trip. We are excited. If all goes well we will be departing June 2017.
Item 5: I am currently reading an interesting book about one of my heroes, U.S. Grant. The book, “Whip the Rebellion” Ulysses S. Grant’s Rise to Command by George Walsh.Walsh traces Grant’s rise to power and covers the major battles in detail naming the various generals, colonels, battle sites etc.
I have read quite a few books on the Civil War and one thing I find compelling as well as puzzling is the ability for the two sides to effectively call a “time out” for a couple of hours, clean up the battle field, and even lay down weapons and exchange tobacco for coffee or some other necessity with the enemy. After a few hours has passed there will be a call to arms and the Rebs and Yankees wil shuffle on back to their battle positions and begin fighting once again. Amazing.
George Walsh describes a scene much like many others I have read.
“During the worst of the fighting, Colonel William Martin of Arkansas, wrapping a white handkerchief around a ramrod, mounted the parapet and called a sudden truce. He had noticed that the underbrush had caught fire, threatening the Union wounded lying on the ground with incineration.”Remove your wounded!”he yelled. “We won’t fire a gun till you get them away! Be quick!” Then he leaped down and helped the oncoming rescue party with the task. Once it was finished, a Union major pulled a pair of ornate pistols from his holsters and presented them to Martin, just before the bloodletting resumed, in appreciation of a gallant gesture.” Amazing once again.
Item 6: Dolly Parton-$40 parking-$16 beer-$6 pretzles- VALUE BEER!!!
The Dolly Parton show was outstanding. If she were to run for president I guarantee you she would get more votes than those running right now.Dolly has a beautiful singing voice and she utilizes that southern drawl perfectly describing tales of her youth back in Tennessee. Watching her play the saxophone of “Yakkity Sax” was worth the price of admission.
My daughter took me and her oldest son to the Shoreline to see the show. Parking as usual was a snafu and we bypassed the $40 parking lot and drove about ten yards further to the “free” parking lot. Good choice for us. We made the 125 yard walk to the gates of the Shoreline and realized the gate would not open until 7 P.M. It was now 6 P.M.. Looking at the front of the arena we saw a long line going down the each side of the venue. A long line. We began walking and ended up walking all the way back to the parking lot where the end of the line was and where we began. That was OK. Everyone was friendly, many fans were dressed up in their Dolly wigs, Dolly makeup, Dolly sequins, Dolly boots etc.
At 7P.M. the doors opened and about 30 minutes later we were inside the outdoor theater. We were thirsty and thought we would grab a beer for us and a soda for my grandson. The sign at the counter said, “Coors Beer $16.50- Premium beer $18.50- VALUE BEER $4. I am not a cheapskate but when my daughter flatly stated, “I’ll have a beer when I get home” I had to agree with her. I did ask the counter lady what VALUE BEER was. She reached down under the counter and brought up with a flourish a beautiful blue and white can covered with snow covered alps. It was Busch Bavarian. I hadn’t seen that beer can since high school. And as I recollect it wasn’t that bad. She held it up for a long time and said, ,”Well, would you like one?” I thought about it and replied, “You know I could buy four cans of Bush Bavarian beer for the cost of one Coors.” She smiled at me. “I’ll take a diet Pepsi, please.” “That will be $5.50,” she said. Yes the joys of going out.
Enjoy! And until Friday November 4….
