When a musician claims to be performing for over 20 years, you might imagine a seasoned performer, but Jonathan and William Goodwin learned vocals and instruments while children, and their finely tuned voices and instrumentation show their skills at a still young age. They are joined with third part singer Kenneth Chase whose voice blends so well that one could assume he is a sibling as well. Guesting with the group are several well-known bluegrass musicians: Sammy Shelor, Michael Cleveland, Jim VanCleave, Rob Ickes, Scott and Curtis Vestal.
The band manages to put modern instrumentation into a bluegrass formula so that the contemporary songs sound as if they were written in a classic period. The opening song, “Midnight Train,” has a hard-driving banjo rhythm as the singers implore the train to get them home on time. Two of Sarah Beth Terry’s songs are included, “Don’t Need Cuttin’” and “Bottom of the Holler,” and they both mention the brothers’ home state Kentucky. The joys of living the simple country life style away from destination weddings is celebrated in “Everyday Thing” and “Monday Morning” has the pleasures of a weekend with a country girl who “likes to sing along” and “take your mind off your troubles.” The traditional “Shady Grove” and “Barefoot Girl” have an old timey banjo groove and just invite your feet to dance. While this is the first Pinecastle album for the group, it’s sure to be a debut that will attract attention and acclaim.
