Valentine’s Day

Feb 14, 2021 | Welcome Column

It’s Valentine’s Day, what shall we play? Probably not the only bluegrass tune I know of that actually has the word valentine in the lyrics:

You can send me pretty flowers, you can sen me valentines
Send me letters every day but it won’t pay
Leap to my desire, nothing else will do
It’s goodbye and so long to you
(The Osborne Brothers with Mac Wiseman)

No, we want warm squishy tunes that have happy energy for the one that is most dear to us. here are a few suggestions:

1. Cabin on a Mountain (Vern Williams)

Now my rambling days are over for tonight I’m on my way
To that cabin on a mountain in Tennessee so far away
I’ve searched this wide world over, sailed upon the deep blue sea
But in a cabin with my darling’s where my heart will always be

2. A Good Woman’s Love (Bill Monroe)

And when the night falls and the moon shines above
I’m a man with a dream and a good woman’s love

3. Nobody’s Darling (Jimmie Davis)

Be nobody’s darling but mine, Love. Be honest and faithful and kind
And promise me that you will never be nobody’s darling but mine

4. I’ll Love Nobody but You (Jim & Jesse)

I’ll never love anybody but you, baby, baby
I’ll never love anybody but you if you’ll be my girl

5. Erase the Miles (IIIrd Tyme Out)

Wish I could hold you forever
And somehow erase all the miles

6. Ocean of Diamonds (Jimmy Martin)

I’d give an ocean of diamonds, a world filled with flowers to hold you closely for just a few hours
Hear you whisper softly that you love me too would change all the dark clouds to the bluest of blue

7. Head Over Heels (Flatt & Scruggs)

I’m feeling so blue I don’t know what to do
Because I’m head over heels in love with you

8. It’s Grand to Have Someone to Love You (Traditional Grass)

It’s grand to have someone to love you, someone who knows your every care
Someone to cheer you when you’re lonely, just call for her and she’ll be there

9. My Love Will Not Change (Del McCoy)

My love will not change. … It just rolls like a river to the sea of your name
My love will not change. … It’s as steady as the rhythm of the pouring rain

10. Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes (Jim & Jesse)

Who makes me forget all the other girls I’ve met? Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes
Who’s sweeter to me than she really ought to be? Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes

So, there you have my top ten. That ought to get you started at least. Bluegrass has no shortage of love songs. (Of course, today we should skip all those songs with lovers by the name of Willie). I hope you all enjoy your Valentine’s Day today! I’ll see you again tomorrow, folks.
