What are you reading this summer?

Aug 7, 2016 | Welcome Column

When it comes to reading, I am very, very selective. Really, it just depends on the mood I’m in that day. Most of the time, I’m reading books that make me feel that I’ve actually learned something.

Let’s take, “Parallel Worlds” by Michio Kaku. Honestly, I do think that this book is over my head. Anything that Michio Kaku write’s, is going to be pretty deep. You see, this guy has his doctorate in theoretical physics. This means the study of the theory of the properties of matter and energy. As opposed to the applications of matter and energy. So in other words, it is a theory. A thought processes that might or might not actually exist. You see anything that might be a theory needs to be proved without a doubt to be true to exist. And believe me, there are plenty of folks out there that will Poo-Poo this stuff.
I have another book that I promised myself to read before I die. “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” by Dee Brown. My Mom was a half white, half Indian. That makes me a 1/4 Native American Indian. Sadly, when my Mom was nine, her Mother died. Then her Dad left for the reservation. Never, to ever be seen again. So therefore, my Mom had no idea which tribe she was from. Our family has never been able to find out where the heck he went. So reading this book has brought my attention to the forefront to the plight of the American Indian. This era of American History is just so hard to understand how it occurred. Baffling!
O.K. this next book is just a book for fun and amusement. “Deal” by Bill Kreutzmann. As you all my know by now. I have been a working drummer in rock bands since the 60’s. Kreutzmann is one of the drummer’s for The Grateful Dead Band. As a teenager, he had Jerry Garcia knocking on his door looking for a banjo that Kreutzmann’s father was selling. They were the best of friends from that point on. The stories are really scary. Kids, don’t ever have a life like this. It is not in your best interest!
Now this last book I’m reading is one for me. “Meditation as Medicine” by Dharma Singh Khalsa, MD. You see folks, I’m a “migraineur.” I’ve read this book two maybe three times. That is so I get everything understood completely. The book does go over a lot of different medical maladies, dedicating only two pages to migraines. But they are the two best pages in the whole book, for me anyway.
Now I don’t intend to review these books. I don’t have those qualifications. Sometimes my needs are to reread books so I get a really good understanding of the content. Some people have better comprehension. Read the book once and pass it on. Well, when you’ve been dropped on your head three times in a lifetime. And you realize that you’re not as hard headed as your father used to tell you that you were. Sometimes, certain subjects can be harder to understand than other subjects. I guess my point is that at least I’m trying to improve my mind by reading.
So, let’s start a Message Board Post as to what you are reading this summer. There has been some discussion as to why the Message Board is so quiet. Maybe this might get the ball rolling on at least one subject.
I do apologize for the shortened column this month. Really, I haven’t had many good days this month to concentrate. Migraines do that you know.
Thank you for Listening
