Since this is a fifth Friday and we have no regularly scheduled Welcomer to welcome, I thought I’d take advantage of the slot to make a brief plea for some volunteers. Here’s the deal–we have some empty Welcome Column slots and it’s time to fill them.
The commitment is pretty straightforward. You have an entire month to write a column for the web site. We assign you one day per month, you write a piece of no less than 900 words and send it to us no later than one day before your column is to run, and that’s it. Columns can be about pretty much anything, but politics and religion are off limites.
So, do you need to be a great writer? No, but you need to be a good writer. These columns are not edited by me, and because they’re the first thing visitors read (we know this because we track the stats) when they come to our site, they need to be good. I’ve been told by many, many columnists over the past thirteen years that doing the monthly Welcome has been both fun and enlightening. Good writers have become great writers. And if you need another reason for considering a time in the tank, there’s this–you’d be volunteering for one of the best bluegrass associations in the world.
